You do not need a microphone

Big Walk is about restricted communication, not voice hardware specifically. In-game text chat carries the same gameplay rules as speech: distant players cannot read it normally, soundproof glass can block it, and a walkie-talkie can transmit it.

Why external chat changes the puzzles

Some challenges deliberately remove speech or separate players who see different information. An unrestricted Discord call or messaging app bypasses that rule and can turn a designed communication challenge into simple dictation. Nothing technically punishes the group, but parts of the game stop making sense.

Good text-chat habits

• Establish short names for colors, shapes and positions before entering a barrier puzzle.
• Carry walkie-talkies when splitting across the island.
• Use pointing and arm gestures for nearby silent coordination.
• Choose the correct world size so a text-only group is not given more simultaneous roles than it can fill.
